A thawing arctic sea bed is releasing massive amounts of methane gas into the atmosphere.  The discovery off the eastern Siberian coast could accelerate global warming.

Imagine Reality! Unfortuneately an alarming majority of USA'ers suffer from frozen brains. One of the serendipities of 'Global Warming' should be the thawing of their little gray matter globs so that they could be tutored into developing skills in original thought. Perhaps then they could actually practice inductive reasoning and acquire some insight into our physical environment that would be based on scientific facts and not media hipe. Alas, it's less demanding on one's capacities to be tought what to think as opposed to how to think.

Geologists and geophysicists have been aware of huge deposits of 'methane cyclades' in the form of crystal lenses near the bottom of oceans above the continental shelves. The depth of these lenses seems to be about 1500'. Perhaps this known condition could be the source of the methane that is mentioned and that appears in a crystaline, frozen state. Apparently these deposits have been calculated to contain more hydocarbon material than all of the known and produced crude oil and natural gas known to date. The physical state is emensely unstable therefore somewhat dangerous to disturb in state; however, numerous studies are in progress to determine a safe method of recovery.

Another side note to our fascination with recently acquired knowledge of Global Warming is the fact that this orb we live on has always been in a state of "Climate Change" for billions of years. Apparently it began (change) after earth developed an atomosphere. This occured long before neanderthals began polluting the the earth by building fires. ( I don't think, that forrest fires have contributed any CO2 to the atomoshere since earth developed plant life a little over 2 billion years ago; but time will tell.)

I find comfort in a thought that a poet Hugh MacDiarmid wrote:

    "What happens to us
Is irrelevant to the world's geology
But what happens to the world's geology
Is not irrelevant to to us."

all americans are not idiots if it was not for americans the western world would be in the stone age read history we are just lost but we will find the way i hope

We need to get a handle on guys like this. They are sooo full of gas they are reason our palnet is heating up.

    Fredsmithak,
Maybe you and I should devise a means of capturing the off-gasing. I propose a floating dome tethered to the sea floor that would capture the gas as it leaves the water. It would be captured in the domed area above the water line and could be siphoned to a vessel and then transferred to the grid or power plant.
But then again, that seems very logical and we as Americans dont really do the 'logical thing' very well... ;>)

Who cares? Pass a law and a tax against it and life goes on. What's not to like? Shut the American economy down, eliminate foreign aid and defense subsidies that it currently provides, that should cure the problem, yes?

Check your facts before calling people morons. Permafrost is well known to those who live in Alaska................................ "The research results, published in the March 5 edition of the journal Science, show that the permafrost under the East Siberian Arctic Shelf, long thought to be an impermeable barrier sealing in methane, is perforated and is leaking large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. Release of even a fraction of the methane stored in the shelf could trigger abrupt climate warming."

I wonder if it would be possable to harness the gas for a power sorce?
  • geodude
    jjoshua-
The bed was previously permafrost (look it up if you have any questions moron) - decomposition of organic material is normally inhibited in this state and thus very little methane is released. Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas, in fact 70 times more powerful than an equal amount of CO2.

The Floor of the Ocean is covered by FROZEN methane. God's holy word the BIBLE even speaks of it. The Bible knew before modern man did! LOL
  • BoracayOcean69
the floor of the ocean has FROZEN Methane on it. It's fact. (Even spoken of in God's holy word the BIBLE)
  • jjoshua
Morons. Is the sea bed frozen? How can it "thaw" when it is not frozen? More hype and lies....
  • akgail
If it's thawing, then it must have been frozen!! We're all gonna thaw out!!
  • Brian
You are the moron, methane has different chemical properties than water so it freezes at different temperatures and pressures, The bottom of the seabed and its sediments is under a lot of pressure.water is heavy. Your comments are why everyone knows americans are idiots
