The Bioneers Conference starts this weekend at UAA and our food supply will be a topic.

Is Alaska becoming a farm state?  There was tremendous response to our show last winter about local food. And since then plenty more has happened. Mainly there’s more local food, and more effort to get more growing. Have you joined the bandwagon?

Let’s hear from you on the next “Talk of Alaska.”

  • The Sitka Local Foods Network (http://www.sitkalocalfoodsnetwork.org/) is one of many community organizations working on improved food security. Our organization has its origins in the 2008 Sitka Health Summit, when community members selected two food security projects (starting a local public market and improving our community gardens/building a new greenhouse) in its top five community health priorities. We started the Sitka Farmers Market in 2008. We built the St. Peter's Fellowship Farm community garden in 2008 and expanded it in 2009. We have a proposal in to build a community greenhouse (waiting for the state to OK the land use). We support the sustainable harvest of traditional subsistence foods. And we host education and encouragement events for community members wanting to learn more about producing local food.
