Judge OKs Compensation Plan for Sexual Abuse Victims

A judge has approved a compensation package for victims of sexual abuse by clergy overseen by the Fairbanks Diocese. Anchorage attorney Ken Roosa represents many of the 300 victims, mostly from western Alaska native villages, who sued the diocese, forcing it into bankruptcy last year.

Alaska Senators Split Vote on Health Care Bill

Alaska’s -S Senators split their vote Saturday on whether to bring health care legislation to the floor. Democrats got exactly the 60 votes needed with all party members lining up for it, and all Republicans voting against introducing it.

Halibut Operators Lose on One-A-Day Rule

Halibut charter operators in southeast Alaska have lost an attempt to get rid of the one-halibut-a-day rule. The charter operators accused the secretary of Commerce, acting through the National Marine Fisheries Service, of failing to explain why the change from two fish to one fish was made, and if it was fair and legal. The new rule took effect in June.

Senate Expected to Vote on Health Care Bill

The US Senate is poised to take a first vote on health care tomorrow (Saturday) night. Senator Lisa Murkowski will vote “no” along with all the other Republicans, so in order to move forward, Democrats need every member of their caucus – all 60 – to vote yes.

Juneau Residents Recover from Massive Mud Slide

Juneau residents displaced by this weekend’s landslides will stay in hotel rooms through the weekend. About 80 residents of downtown Juneau were allowed to return to their homes yesterday afternoon (Sunday), but eight people are still homeless.

Emmonak Gets Boost from FEMA Funds

The City of Emmonak is still repairing itself after massive flooding on the Yukon River last Spring. The village recently got a boost from FEMA, which released over $2 million to repair damaged water and sewer pipes.

The Alaska Purchase: Was it Folly?

When the US bought Alaska from the Russians in 1867, it may have been known as ‘Seward’s Folly’. But conventional wisdom is that Alaska has proved that initial criticism wrong. That the state’s great natural resource wealth has paid for the Seven-point-two million dollar purchase price many times over. Professor David Barker says “folly” may not be such a bad description, at least when you consider the pure economics
of the transaction.

Juneau Police To Use “Black Box” for Crashes

The Juneau Police Department will be the first in the state to get a crash data retrieval system to read the so-called “black box” found in most current vehicles. Prosecutors say they look forward to better evidence in serious and fatal accidents, where the system is likely to be used.
