While low fish returns are tough on fishermen, they’re also tough on hatcheries, which generate a significant portion of their revenues from “cost recovery” — or harvesting and selling some of their adult fish returns.

Southeast Conference pushes on importance of Census accuracy

Southeast Alaska’s organization of business and government leaders says new Census Bureau methods could harm the region. The Southeast Conference is asking federal officials to make sure rural residents are fully counted. The census issue is one of several addressed by conference delegates during their annual meeting.

Tragedy on the Alsek River, Part 2

Disaster struck two raft trips on the Alsek River this summer, leaving a father and son dead on one trip. Another trip was nearly ruined when a calving glacier flooded the boaters’ campsite. KTOO’s John Ryan reported Friday on the preparations one group took to avoid a similar fate in the remote wilderness north of Glacier Bay. In part two, we see the lengths rafters will go to to avoid being trapped by icebergs.

First crab fishermen, now Iditarod racers seeking ‘reality’ fame

The drama of the Iditarod will reach millions of Americans beginning next month when a new reality show based on the “Last Great Race” debuts. Two-time defending Iditarod champion Lance Mackey of Fairbanks is one of seven mushers central to the Discovery Channel program.

3 Troopergate witnesses fail to comply with subpoenas

Three witnesses in the Troopergate investigation failed to comply with subpoenas this morning. They were ordered to appear at 10:00 at the Anchorage legislative conference room, and a packed room waited more than half an hour before Senator Hollis French came out and read a prepared statement, that said what everybody already knew.

Ted Stevens briefs reporters in Anchorage but won’t talk about his trial

Senator Ted Stevens met with Alaska reporters today to outline money coming to the state for a wide range of military preparedness issues. Stevens was careful not to talk about his trial that starts in Washington DC on Monday, but he did say he would like to testify if his attorneys allow it and although he doesn’t yet know the full schedule for the trial dates, he expects to be in the state in October.

Special statehood flags set to fly across Alaska

American Flags dating back to statehood are going on display across Alaska. The vintage flags were produced in 1959, when Alaska entered the Union as America’s 49th state. State Representative John Coghill of North Pole is heading up a project to frame and place the 49-star flags in state offices and public libraries across Alaska. Coghill says a fellow Fairbanks legislator initially found the flags.

Disaster struck two raft trips this summer on the Alsek River, which flows from the Yukon to Alaska. A skilled rafter from Idaho and his son died after getting thrown from their raft in June. A few days earlier, a calving glacier sent a wall of water through another group’s campsite. Possessions and boats were scattered, but no one was hurt.

Ted Stevens trial set to begin

Lawyers in the case against Senator Ted Stevens had what is expected to be their last hearing this morning before the trial starts next week. Jury selection will begin Monday in the federal case. Stevens is charged with seven counts of lying on his financial disclosure statements about gifts he received.

It’s official. Congressman Don Young has won the Republican primary for Alaska’s lone US House seat. His opponent, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell conceded today. The division of elections also certified the primary results today.

Developing local renewable energy sources

Municipal leaders from across rural Alaska met in Girdwood this week for a conference on developing local, renewable energy resources. The meeting was sponsored by the Alaska Energy Authority and the University of Alaska. It was designed to give communities concrete answers on bringing down the increasingly unaffordable price of energy.

Yukon Whitefish market back for third year

Whitefish is arguably the lightest, sweetest white meat fish in Alaska waters. Now there’s a commercial fishery targeting the fish on the Lower Yukon River. It’s the third year that there’s been a market for the small white-meat fish.
