Copper River reds continue weak run

The sockeye return on the Copper River continues to come in weaker than forecast.  That’s shut down commercial fishing on the Delta near Cordova, and will mean restrictions for dip netters at Chitina in coming weeks.

The real question is who is responsible for this low weak run of salmon on the Copper river, the commercial fishermen for over harvesting, the uncontrolable numbers of dipnetters in Chitina , or the poor management by the Department of Fish & Game? How about the trial & error science of the Fish hatchery? The only management I have seen so far by Board of Fish & Game is to limit the benefits of harvest for the Alaska Natives on the Copper river. I personally do not call that proper management of our resources because the Copper river Natives have always used only what they needed. I say comply with the rural priority requirements of the Federal government, because that is what is needed.
