The Minerals Management Service (MMS) today announced they’re moving forward with an environmental impact statement (EIS) for leasing potential as a next step in the 5-year plan for the North Aleutian basin / Bristol Bay region.  This comes on the same day that areas of Bristol Bay were defined as critical habitat for dwindling numbers of North Pacific Right Whales. Conservation groups were quick to denounce the advance of offshore leasing activity in the area.

I wish to comment on the story reported by L.Townsend on 4/8/08 regarding the MMS and Bristol Bay leases. In reporting about Shell, Ms Townsend stated Shell Oil pointed out undersea pipelines in Sakalin and Norway, using the word “they”, which implies involvement of Shell Oil. In the Norway pipeline, I am quite sure Shell Oil is not involved.
Information on Statoil undersea pipeline project can be found at this site:

To the best of my understanding, Statoil is the only party involved in this project.
