Anchorage could become the first city in Alaska to offer curbside recycling. The mayor’s office presented a comprehensive waste management plan to the assembly this afternoon. The curbside recycling component would eventually cover about 12,000 Anchorage households- mostly downtown and surrounding areas.

A correction to your recycling story–Petersburg, Alaska already has curbside recycling. Petersburg Indian Association does curbside pickup on the same day as garbage pickup. My understanding is that Petersburg recycles more material than Juneau, though tribal administrator John Havrilek could provide more accurate information.
Just a little more information on the curside recycling program in Petersburg. I am the Director for the IGAP (Indian General Assistance Program) for the Petersburg Indian Association. We started a curbside recycling program 3 years ago and with great success. It is a small program compared to bigger cities but it continues to grow, and the people that are participating in this program think it’s a great program. This is a free service provided to the citizens of Petersburg that live on Mitkof Island and is voluntary, although we don’t collect from every home we do collect from over 10% of the homes. Every week we get more people signing up and our goal for this year is to have 50% of the homes involved through active campaigning. I do applaud Anchorage for starting up a program and wish more communities would start. It does take a lot of work but it is worth it.
If you have any questions about our program you can contact or our Tribal Administrator at 907-772-2990 or through my email.

I am the owner of a systems integrator and electrical contracting company who is currently involved in building and automating Material Recover Facilities in Southern California that semi automatically separate recyclable material out of the normal waste stream of household trash.
These facilities are drastically reducing the tonnage of trash currently being land filled in So Cal. I believe this technology would greatly benefit your communities.
If anyone is interested in discussing the details of how we can provide you with a fully functional Material Recovery Facility in your area please contact me.
Thank You,
