Tongass forest dwellers, defenders and developers talk openly about the future

Can a conservation group and a foundation help chart a new economic agenda for Southeast Alaska? That’s what some members would like to see out of a 2-year-old effort called the Tongass Futures Roundtable.

    It is long past time for the philosophy of John Muir to guide the management of the Tongass.

    The highest and best use is leaving the forest recover from five decades of clearcut logging. In two hundreds years, the value of this forest to converting carbon dioxide to wood storage will be invaluable to Americans one hundred years from now
