Earlier this week, Exxon turned in its final brief to the high court in the Exxon Valdez case. The document focused on three main areas: maritime precedent, the clean water act and finally, an argument that Exxon has already forked over plenty. Exxon attorneys write in the brief, “The $3.4 billion Exxon has already paid is enough to deter anyone from doing anything.” But one local has done the numbers and says Exxon has paid nowhere near that sum.

The Exxon Valdez spill destroyed the way of life for a native people. Exxon believes they already paid financial compensation. Would the American people be OK with giving up our way of life, even for financial compensation? NO. In fact, we actually go to WAR to defend OUR way of life. If the Supreme Court caves into Exxon, they have truly undervalued a way of life and then NO way of life is protected from big business, not even ours! Without the law and the ability to punish big business, there really is no way left anymore to counterbalance the short sighted interests of big business. Revolutions usually follow once power becomes unbalanced against the masses. Remember history repeating itself. Even the businesses themselves would not prosper once their interests push the masses into revolution. Therefore, we cannot let big business have its way as much for its own sake as much as for ours. I want my children to live in peace.
