In a letter to ConocoPhillips CEO James Mulva, governor Palin said the company’s proposal “falls critically short of meeting the state’s key objectives” of a gas line project.

Alaska’s getting more attention from the Presidential candidates. Democrat Hillary Clinton has plans to open a campaign office in Anchorage. And the campaign for fellow Democrat Barack Obama is sending two more staffers to the state. With tight races for the nomination in both parties, and Alaska’s caucuses happening on Super Tuesday- voters in the state could be more important in the selection than ever before.

Joshua Wade’s lawyer quits

Joshua Wade’s attorney has resigned. U-S Public Defender Mary Geddes has handled his case ever since his first appearance in federal court. Wade is accused of using Mindy Schloss’s ATM card in early August to make two 500 dollar withdrawals. Schloss was last seen alive August 3rd. Her body was found September 13th in thick woods near Wasilla.

The commercial harvest of lamprey eel on the Yukon River turned out to be mostly a bust last month. The boneless parasites return to Alaska rivers each winter in droves, and fishermen in western and Interior Alaska catch the lamprey by cutting holes in the river ice and scooping
them out with dipnets. But this winter, the lamprey were elusive.

The Yukon Kuskokwim Regional Wind Development workshop is happening in Bethel today and tomorrow. Village residents that already have wind power are mingling with villages who are interested in pursuing it. The village of Toksook Bay is happy with the alternative energy system they have installed.

For most Alaskans, Christmas was over on December 26th. But for some residents of native coastal communities, it ended early this morning. It’s known as Russian Christmas – an Orthodox holiday that honors the three wisemen’s visit to the newborn Jesus. Over three nights, January 7th, 8th and 9th, it’s celebrated across Prince William Sound. And in Valdez, the celebration is growing.
