Fairbanks struggles to keep drunk drivers off the road

New Year’s means a lot of people out celebrating and driving after they drink and while many Alaska cities have made progress in reducing drunk driving, Fairbanks continues to struggle with a dangerous mix of alcohol and automobiles.

    I want to toss into this conversation regarding the battle against drunk driving another tool that has been shown, in other states, provinces and countries, to be effectove in reducing drunk driving recidivism: the ignition interlock device. House Bill 19, passed in the house last session, is before the Senate this year. This bill requires DUI offenders to obtain an ignition interlock as part of their probation. It also allows misdemeanor DUI offenders the opportunity to get an Ignition Interlock Limited License during their period of revocation.
