Sunlight isn’t just for conversion to electricity, of course. I would really like to see more effort into modernizing traditional passive solar heating designs. For example, I tried to get the Denali Commission and the Cold Climate Housing Research Center interested in testing a “dry toilet” (Enviro-loo) which uses no water, no fuel or electricity, floats during floods and can be re-located, requires an hour or so maintenance every 3 or 4 years, is cheap, and is based on convection heating from sunlight to be effective. Like building on the south side of mountains and hills and sharing walls, it’s an inexpensive (too inexpensive for funding the testing?) way to forgo North Slope drilling.
