The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE) has initiated a complaint against Sheldon Jackson College for failing to pay its share of scholarship funding and other expenses incurred as part an ongoing “teach-out.” The formal complaint from the will allow ACPE staff to investigate and audit the college’s promises of support for students finishing their Sheldon Jackson degrees at other institutions.

I heard your article and was disappointed at the treatment you gave SJ. Dr. Dobler is presently on funeral leave to bury his last uncle out of state. Any Trustee (like me, or Dr. Arliss Sturgulewski, or Dr. John Tichotsky, etc) could have assisted you on background in this situation. SJ has been working with Alaska Natives for 125 years, but has suffered from lack of funding from Native corporations. Heavy on promises, but light on contributions. The state of Alaska has not been very helpful, and now rather than helping SJ, apparently chooses to file suit over $9,000! Isn’t there some irony here? The surety bond is plenty enough to cover this situation, and is specifically designed to assist in such a setting.
I listened in to the meeting on October 11th, and was surprised that SJ did not have anyone in attendance. I’m not sure that the outcome would have changed, but I would have been interested in hearing the College’s position. I understood that Dr. Dobler was away, but several members of the Board are qualified to speak to the issue.
Jim - why have we heard so little from the board or SJ about what is happening? Silence only leads to mistrust and speculation? What is going on down there?
