AK — APRN’s weekly radio newsmagazine — was chosen as the Best News and Public Affairs Program in the nation for the third consecutive year by the members of Public Radio News Directors, Inc. (PRNDI), at its awards ceremony Saturday in New Orleans. AK has now won the award for 2005, 2006 and 2007, and even took second place during its inaugural year in 2004.
The annual PRNDI competition is the only national contest recognizing excellence in public radio news reporting at local stations. AK won the award in the highly competitive Division A, which received 35 entries from stations in the nation’s largest markets, such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle and San Francisco.
AK’s Executive Producer and Editor Duncan Moon said, “This is a tribute to what a small group of talented and determined people can do. To win the PRNDI award three years in a row puts AK in very select company. I couldn’t be more proud of the staff.”
Comments from the PRNDI Judges
This was an exceptionally produced program on all levels. First, the show’s host has that personable quality that makes radio the intimate medium that it is. Also the writing was outstanding… with an even blend of humor, heart-string tugging and insightful information. However, the thing that made this entry rise above all others was the use of sound. The use of music, movie clips, and vox pop made this really fun listening. I really want to commend the use of vox pop, particularly, because the segue into it was written seamlessly and the production mix outstanding. In fact, the production quality of this program was exceptional throughout. Even the show’s opening used a creative sound montage that made me want to listen to more. This program is a great demonstration that radio news programming can extend beyond the “talking-heads” standard model. Even during the interview segments… there continued to be a creative use of sound. I enjoyed listening to this program and the quality of this program made me wish I lived in APRN’s broadcast area so I could listen to AK on a regular basis.
